Honoring Sandy Mason

We write with a heavy heart to tell you that our beloved teammate Sandy Mason passed away on December 26 at his home with his wife Mary.

Sandy was a co-founder of LegacyWorks Group, though he always pushed that notion away. His vision for what could happen in Teton Valley and the potential to do something special on Teton Creek were the seeds of our work in the region. Conversations that Sandy instigated with the LOR Foundation led to a partnership with LOR that launched the Teton Creek Corridor project. That collaboration shaped our work in the region and how we enable transformative impact, and ultimately launched our nonprofit, Legacy Philanthropy Works. Sandy was the guiding light of the Teton Creek Corridor partnership and the many projects and collaborations that followed in the region.

Sandy’s commitment, clarity and good humor were the foundation for all of our trusting relationships, close partnerships and high-impact collaborations in the region. He was and remains the foundation of LegacyWorks Group writ large. None of it would be but for Sandy. Before Sandy’s passing, Teton Creek Corridor partners decided to name the nature area we protected along Teton Creek in his honor.

Sandy was never afraid to share what he thought and act on his beliefs. He saw the potential for what could be. He understood the implications of poor decisions and rallied the community in defense of its lands and way of life. And he always did so with flourish, style, irreverence and joy. We sure miss him. May we all live such a full life and leave such a lasting legacy on our communities, our landscapes and our friends and loved ones.
