Recoverable Grants
Catalyze your philanthropy
A chance to enhance your giving
Traditional philanthropic gifts and grants are critical to our work. Alongside public funding, they make up the bulk of the funding for our conservation and resilience programs and initiatives.
In addition to one-time or recurring gifts, donors can also support our work through a variety of means that act like loans. Recoverable grants are charitable gifts that are structured like loans, with the expectation that the funds will be returned to the donor after a specific period of time or after certain outcomes are achieved. Recoverable grants can be made out of foundations, donor-advised funds, or from personal assets, and our team can help you structure a recoverable grant to meet your goals and needs.
We have many donors who use recoverable grants to support LegacyWorks to make funds available to meet our operational needs, functionally serving as friendly lines of credit from their donor-advised funds, foundations, or personal resources.
There are other ways to provide loans or loan-like support to LegacyWorks and our partners. Private foundations can also offer loan-like financing to impact initiatives through Program Related Investments (PRIs). Individuals can also make direct loans. Our team can help you assess your options, determine the best fit, and structure the needed agreements.
Case study:
We also recently structured two recoverable grants totalling more than $3 million for our close partner, Catch Together. The funds are to be used to purchase fishing quota, ensuring that small-scale fishing communities have access to and are able to steward local fisheries and the ocean ecosystems they depend upon. These recoverable grants will be forgiven in full or in part, depending on Catch Together’s success in hitting a number of well-defined impact targets, allowing the funders to invest with confidence that their support will meet their impact goals.
