We are thrilled to share the news that our good friends at White Buffalo Land Trust acquired the 1000-acre Jalama Canyon Ranch last week after a successful $6 million capital campaign. The acquisition enabled White Buffalo to protect the property in perpetuity in partnership with the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County and begin to transform it into a working regenerative farm and ranch. White Buffalo can now move their training and education activities there, bringing their vision of a Center for Regenerative Agriculture in Santa Barbara County to life.

LegacyWorks is grateful to have played a part in White Buffalo’s success by bringing together a group of lenders and structuring a low interest $1 million bridge loan for the acquisition. The loan enabled White Buffalo to acquire the ranch this spring and begin restoration and agricultural activities this growing season, accelerating the implementation of their plans by a year. The lenders include a foundation, a donor advised fund and a number of families, some seasoned impact investors and others making their first investment that aligns their assets with their values. Their investment was catalytic for this project and we can’t thank the lenders enough for their participation!

This is the fourth such loan that LegacyWorks has arranged over the past year and a half here on the Central Coast. We have more loan opportunities in the pipeline in a variety of places, and we look forward to enabling more families and foundations to support conservation and regenerative agriculture through their investing as well as their philanthropy. We are also in the early stages of a collaborative effort to launch a Conservation Loan Fund to meet the growing need for this kind of catalytic bridge funding. Please reach out if you’d like to learn more about conservation lending and how you can take part.

Thanks again to the lenders who helped make the acquisition and protection of Jalama Canyon Ranch possible, and congratulations to our friends at White Buffalo Land Trust and the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County on the acquisition and protection of Jalama Canyon Ranch!
