Sentinel Landscapes

LegacyWorks Group & the Sentinel Landscapes Partnership

LegacyWorks is proud to support the Sentinel Landscapes Partnership—a collaborative effort that unites military readiness with land stewardship, disaster resilience, and community well-being.

What Are Sentinel Landscapes?

Sentinel landscapes are federally recognized partnerships dedicated to protecting the military mission by preserving natural and working lands critical to military installations. Across forests, grasslands, coastlines, and farms, these landscapes are essential for ensuring realistic training, testing, and operations—free from encroachment, light pollution, and land use conflicts.

By promoting compatible land use and investing in local partnerships, Sentinel Landscapes are helping to secure America’s defense capabilities while advancing conservation, agriculture, and economic resilience.

Partnership Built on Purpose

Established by the Department of Defense (DOD), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Department of the Interior (DOI), the Sentinel Landscapes Partnership is powered by voluntary collaboration among government agencies, private organizations, local leaders, and landowners.

LegacyWorks Group brings deep experience in community-driven resilience and landscape-scale coordination, contributing to the long-term success of this mission.

Why It Matters

  • Protects critical training areas from encroachment, ensuring our armed forces are ready—today and into the future.

  • Builds trust and partnerships with local communities and promotes collaboration around mutually-aligned goals and outcomes that support the military mission.

  • Enhances agriculture and forestry production, protects wildlife habitat, and increases recreational opportunities to ensure shared prosperity in local working economies.

  • Preserves natural habitats and the species that depend on them improving landscape and infrastructure resilience to the effects of environmental threats that could restrict or negatively impact military training and readiness.

  • Leverages public and private funding to achieve greater cost efficiency using fewer federal resources.

Lasting Impact

Since its launch in 2013, the Sentinel Landscapes Partnership has:

  • Protected 751,000+ acres of strategic land

  • Enrolled 6.3 million acres in land stewardship and technical assistance programs (FY 2023)

  • Leveraged over $1.5 billion from federal and non-federal sources

These investments protect infrastructure, enable mission readiness, and improve lives across rural and urban communities alike.

Grounded in Law, Guided by Purpose

The Sentinel Landscapes Partnership is formally recognized under Title 10, U.S. Code § 2693, reinforcing its importance and expanding opportunities for collaboration. Landowners in designated landscapes may receive priority consideration for federal conservation and resilience programs.
