Teton Groundwater Recharge Market

Improving Seasonal Water Availability

We are bringing together conservation and agriculture partners to change how water is managed in the Teton Basin. LegacyWorks is facilitating the Teton Water Users Association, a community wide effort to improve water management across the Upper Snake Basin. We co-created tools to incentivize farmers to adjust their water management in ways that increase groundwater recharge and the availability of late season water in wetland and instream habitats. So far we have:

  • Launched a pilot market to measurably change the timing of Teton River flows

  • Quadrupled the number of participating canals in our 2nd year and expanded participation for the third year

  • Developed a market design to transition the program to a fully market-based approach
