Immediately after the disastrous mudslide of 1/9/2018, a group of Montecito residents came together and asked County leadership what they needed. In response, they created The Partnership for Resilient Communities, a public-private partnership with the County of Santa Barbara. The Partnership brought in experts experienced with major disasters, emergency management, hazard mitigation, and FEMA cost recovery. The retained geohazard and meteorology experts and, in cooperation with the County, developed an emergency plan to install steel mesh debris nets, enhance monitoring, and implement other measures crucial for the urgent protection of life and property in Montecito. LegacyWorks helped the Partnership engage with the community early in the process, and supported their communications including brand identity, fundraising, and website development. The Partnership for Resilient Communities raised $5 million and obtained emergency permits to install six debris nets in the hills above Montecito.
